As part of my master’s program I am enrolled in Introduction to Educational Research. The first step in the research process involves developing a problem statement about an area I would like to research in technology and education. Following is my problem statement:
I plan to determine the impact of an attendance call-out system for secondary school students on the number of unexcused tardies when compared with schools that do not use a call-out system.
Who: secondary students
What: schools that use an attendance call-out system and those that do not use a call-out system
Why: determine the impact on the number of unexcused tardies

Holly,
ReplyDeleteOh the times I wish we did not have our students called out of class. I say take them out of their time (lunch) not our time.
Holly,
ReplyDeleteI think what you plan on researching is really interesting. Attendance (or lack there of), is a HUGE problem with the high school students I work with. I have a couple of clarifying questions for you as attendance offices in high schools are run so many different ways.
When you use the phrase "call-out system," what is it that you are referencing? Is it an automated system if a student is late, is it a policy that allows parents/guardians to have their students called-out of class?
My second question is, do you think that a schools attendance policy will have an impact on your findings? If that is the case, how will you know if it is the "call-out system" or the overall attendance policy that is impacting attendance? Perhaps my second question will be a moot point once I have a better understanding of the system you are talking about.
Thank you for contributing to the blogging group!

Hi Courtney,
ReplyDeleteThe call-out system I am referring to is one in which parents are notified, either by phone call or email, that their child is late to school and/or a class by a specific amount of time. For instance, there are some schools that contact parents when students are 1-15 minutes late to school or individual classes. My middle school currently only has the computer system call parents at home when students are unverified to school for the first two class periods (equivalent to a block for some schools), and we have a huge tardy problem, so I wonder how the number of tardies compare with schools that run a program to make contact for EACH class period, especially for those students that are tardy to almost every class. Imagine, as a parent, getting more than one call because your child was tardy to each class that the system called for!
I welcome thoughts on the research questions that this raises!
Thanks!
